Ian is a dispute resolution partner with a diverse breadth of experience in complex litigation and asset tracing/recovery matters, often with a cross-border element. These matters frequently include the obtaining of interim relief for clients including asset freezing injunctions, together with preservation of evidence and third-party disclosure orders. He is also regularly instructed to coordinate and provide strategic advice to clients as part of action taken in common law jurisdictions other than England, including the Channel Islands, the Caribbean, Cyprus, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Ian’s practice also has a concentration on banking and finance disputes with a particular focus on property acquisition finance and disputes relating to complex investment products. He also has experience in conducting major investigations for clients including those where potential fraud has arisen.
Recent experience:
- Acting for the Bank of Ireland in securing victory in major fraud and breach of fiduciary duty claims against a former senior executive and borrower involving asset freezing and search orders: Bank of Ireland v Jaffery and Anor [2012 EWHC 1377]
- Advising the US Trustee of Bernie Madoff’s estate in a major claim against his London operating company, Madoff Securities International Limited, and its former directors.
- Acting for Tradition UK Limited, a leading interdealer broker, in a significant dispute with one of its competitors involving confidential information and an alleged team move.
- Acting for Tradition in a dishonest assistance claim brought against it arising from a VAT carousel fraud in the trading of carbon credits: Bilta (UK) Ltd v Tradition Financial Services Ltd [2022] EWHC 723 (Ch)
- Acting for Investec Bank Limited in English asset recovery proceedings arising from judgments obtained in South Africa.
- Advising clients in respect of the mis-selling of financial products such as interest rate hedging products.
- Advising on loan facility disputes concerning allegations of covenant breaches.
